Tears

Where have you gone
Right now when I need you
The world has turned to stone
And everything I knew is falling away

Here I am
Left to contemplate this aching in my heart
An empty place left behind
When you went away

I know that I’ve done this
Don’t throw away your chances while they last
You’ll be all that remains
When your only companions are your mistakes

I remember
When all was fresh and beautiful
Memories leaving purest pain
Using the tender, awful tears
To wash the blood off my face

I weep for you
Not knowing when or if I’ll feel the warmth
Of the sun shining on your golden face
But also for myself

Inside I am still warm
Though my touch has grown cold
From dragging myself along
The bitter metal floor of the new earth
One that I no longer recognize

And here I am
Waiting, weeping in the gloom
My only source of light
The memory of your hand in mine
