Stowe Rides

 

Stowe, VT is located in the northern Green Mountains. There is good riding in all directions.

The rides are grouped according to the four quadrants in the map below. Be sure to click on

Mountains and Lake - Adirondacks

The Green Mountains of Vermont, the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and the Lake Champlain area are great places to ride. Route 17 winds through the Appalachian Gap and runs to Lake Champlain. It is one of Vermont's great roads. Tracy Road, Ensign Pond Rd, Lincoln Pond Rd, and Hurricaine Rd are great Adirondack twisties. Climb up Route 73 into the Adirondacks to visit the Olympic sites near Lake Placid. Routes 86 and 9N are beautiful runs past alpine rivers.

Ride #1 (NEW) - This is a great ride that combines an Appalachian Gap run with some of the best twisty roads in the Adirondacks. Visit historic Crown Point.. Highlights include Tracy Road (Route 6) - (video), Ensign Pond Road (Route 4) - (video), and, Lincoln Pond Road. Enjoy a scenic 20 minute ferry crossing ($6.00) from Essex to Charlotte (ferry schedule - leaves NY every 1/2 hour until 5:30pm, hourly from 5:30 pm to 8:30pm). Lunch at the ADK Cafe. 219 miles.

Ride #2 (NEW) - This ride is similar to ride #1 except that it spends a little less time in the Adirondacks. Lunch is at the Turtle Island Cafe in Willsboro. 191 miles.

Ride #3 - Here is a nice 231 mile ride. Route 100, Route 17, Crown Point, Tracy Road (video), BBQ, the Adirondacks, Whiteface Mountain, Ausable Chasm, a one-hour ferry ride from Port Kent, NY to Burlington, VT ($6.75) (ferry schedule - leaves NY at 1pm, 3:45pm, and 6:15pm), and Route 108. What's not to like???  :) (approx 6 hours and 15 minutes without stops.)

Ride #5 - This ride is similar to ride #3 except that it uses the shorter 20 minute ferry crossing ($6.00) from Essex to Charlotte (ferry schedule - leaves NY every 1/2 hour until 5:30pm, hourly from 5:30 pm to 8:30pm) and eliminates Route 108 in Vermont. 242 miles.

Mountains and Lake - Vermont Gaps

The Vermont Gaps are some of the prettiest mountain passes in the Northeast. They also have some great twisty roads. Routes 17, 125, and 73, Lincoln Gap Road, and Bethel Mountain Road are sure to put a smile on your face. Throw in Route 100, Moss Glen Falls, and Texas Falls and you have the makings of a superb day of riding,

Ride #1 (NEW) - This is one great and exciting ride. Ride Vermont's best Gap roads. Routes 17, 125, and 73, Lincoln Gap Road, and Bethel Mountain are all part of this ride. Route 17 and Lincoln Gap Road are ridden in both directions. Lincoln Gap Road has some hard-pack gravel. Lunch at Toziers in Bethel. 210 miles. (approx 5 hours without stops.)

Lake Champlain and the Islands

Lake Champlain and the Islands provide a perfect backdrop for a fine day of riding. Tour the Islands, admire the scenery, and ride the great roads near Jay Peak. Lunch in Swanton, VT or swing over to Newport, VT.

Ride #1 (NEW) - Tour the Lake Champlain Islands with a stop at the Champlain Statue at St. Anne's Shrine. Ride along the Canadian border before wicking it up Routes 105 and 242 around Jay Peak. Ride Route 118 and Route 100 back to Stowe. 197 miles. (approx 5 hours without stops.)

Ride #2 (NEW) - Tour the Lake Champlain Islands with a stop at the Champlain Statue at St. Anne's Shrine. Ride through pretty farm country on North Road and South Road before taking Route 108 back to Stowe. 155 miles.  (approx 4 hours without stops.)

Vermont's Northeast Kingdom

Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is considered by some to be the last bastion of "Old Vermont." This lightly traveled corner of the State has lots of wilderness and moose.

Ride #1 (NEW) - This is Rich (PuckerNoMore) ride from the Stowe Birthday Bash. Ride Route 16 to Caspian Lake and visit Willey's General Store in Greensboro. Continue past Crystal Lake to Route 5A south and beautiful Lake Willoughby. Lunch in Island Pond before riding twisty and scenic Route 102 along the Connecticut River. Ride Routes 114 and 111 to Newport before taking Route 242 and Route 100 back toward Stowe. 245 miles. (approx 6 hours without stops.)

Ride #2 - Ride Route 16 to Caspian Lake and visit Willey's General Store in Greensboro. Continue past Crystal Lake to Route 5A south and beautiful Lake Willoughby. Lunch in St. Johnsbury before riding twisty and scenic Route 102 along the Connecticut River. Ride 105 and 111 past Island Pond and Lake Seymour before taking Route 14 back toward Stowe. 220 miles. Vermont Piedmont Region

Vermont's Piedmont Region is the foothills that run roughly from Route 89 east to the New Hampshire border. The Piedmont is an area of rolling hills, forests, and farms. A day in the Piedmont is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Ride #1 (NEW) - Ride Route 12 south to Montpelier and then beautiful Route 110 south to South Royalton. Lunch at Eaton's Sugar House before riding twisty 132 and routes 113 and 244 along Lake Fairlee to the Connecticut River. Take 25 and 302 to West Groton and then ride twisty route 232 north to Route 2. Finish with Route 215 past Cabot Farm and then Routes 15 and 100 back to Stowe.
