Here is a link to the Virtual PC Program that allows you to load another operating system on the PC - We have loaded Vista as a virtual System on the Club XP machine.   I have loaded Linux on my laptop and here is the link to download Linux.  (This is a 695 mb download, which takes a while).

Lee attended the Pomona Rally of the FMCA including a computer seminar given by Steve Bass of Pcworld Magazine - Steve was kind enough to email the Seminar notes to Lee and you can see them here  P.S.  I used Snagit to capture all the Email, including the links and paste them into a blank page to reference here - isn't snagit a great tool. 

Darel presented a Power Point Presentation on "how to speed up a slow computer" click here to download/view the presentation (remember to press the spacebar to advance the slides) this is a big file, will take a while to download so be patient.

Sheila found a program which allows one to take over a remove computer and troubleshoot programs, transfer files, etc.  Lee and Darel demonstrated this program (which worked great) and here is the link.

Darel found a program (Free) which allows downloading Youtube (and other) Video/Audio - the program is called Freecorder 4, click here for the link - there is also a Video at this link to see what the program can do.    The Program records any Video you view to "Temporary Internet Files - Click here for the procedure on how to avoid that  (Word file  doc format). 

Darel found a Device to Transfer Video/Audio from any analog source (like VCR, CamCorders, etc) to a DVD it is called "SIIG USB 2.0 Video Capture Device - It is available from Fry's Electronics at this link.

Rick demonstrated "google phone", which allows free phone calls to any phone (landline or cell) in North American - (that includes Canada) - Signup for Google mail and then the phone is an option (free)

Darel demonstrated Skype - which allows Video Conferencing with another party on Skype and also includes the capability (at a charge) to call any phone in the world.  Click here for the Skype download.

Carol made a presentation on how Computers are used in the Classroom - click here (Word File . doc format)   Carol also demonstrated a defice from Pandigital (panscan05) which can be used to scan slides, pictures, negatives, etc without being connected to a computer - click here for the link to Pandigital.

Lee talked about a program to validate your software drivers called Drivecure - click here for the link to the site. The program will perform a free check of your Drivers, but charges to update them. 

Don found a way to set your default email address to a Web Based email (Like Gmail, AOL, Yahoo) - It turns out there are different procedures for each email type and also each operating system (XP, Vista, 7) so the best way is to use a google search  titled "Change Default Email to xxx" and select the correct option.

Don Peterson demonstrated two Linux programs (puppy Linux) and Linux Mint.  I received an email from Larry Finger ( a former member) who said that he uses Linux version called OpenSUSE - (click on "Get it" and choose the version for your hardware)  

Bill Ringrose found a site which shows the Front Page of many newspapers across the country - click here for the link.

Most Emal Programs limit the size of a file that can be attached to an Email; however, Don found a FREE website called Wetransfer.com which allows you to upload a file (up to 2GB) and then add up to 20 email addresses who can download the file from their website.  You also receive a notification that your addressee(s) have downloaded the file.   Here is the link: 

Ed found a FREE site called "Dropbox" which is really a winner for sharing files, et all between computers.  You register and download a program on each computer which creates a folder called "dropbox" - The website then keeps all files in the dropbox folder in sync with other computers that have registered under that name.  You can also log-on to Drobox.com and view/download your files.  Click here for the link to the dropbox website.

We have all had problems remembering log-in's and Passwords - Ed found a website callced "SplashID"  which has software to safely store your passwords - the company also offers a hardware version (which is a 4GB) flash drive shaped like a key and contains the spashID software to keep your passwords safe - here is the link to the site.

Don found an "add in" to internet explorer which prevents sites from tracking your activity - it is called "do not track plus" and here is the

link.
